Abuela’s Salsa

PREP TIME: 15 MINUTES

SERVES: 4

Abuela’s Salsa, a mouthwatering blend of ripe tomatoes, fiery jalapeño peppers, and a dash of cumin, has a rich history. This cherished recipe was passed down through generations, originating with Anna’s (our floor manager) great-grandmother who immigrated to Texas from Mexico in the late 19th century. Anna hopes to share her family's salsa with the world someday as she plans to start her own business, "Anna's Salsa Delights," with dreams of it becoming a beloved household name. Anna's salsa is not just a condiment; it's a delicious slice of history and a testament to her family's culinary legacy.

Ingredients:

5 ripe tomatoes, diced
1/2 red onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 jalapeño pepper, seeded
and finely chopped (adjust to
taste for spiciness)
1/2 cup fresh cilantro,
chopped
Juice of 1 lime
1 teaspoon salt (adjust to
taste)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional,
to balance flavors)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tomatoes: Wash the tomatoes, remove the stems, and dice them into small pieces. You can also remove the seeds if you prefer a less watery salsa.
  2. Chop the Vegetables: Finely chop the red onion, jalapeño pepper (adjust the amount to your desired spiciness), and garlic. If you like a milder salsa, you can remove the seeds and membranes from the jalapeño.
  3. Cilantro: Wash and chop the fresh cilantro. Use both the leaves and the tender stems for added flavor.
  4. Combine Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the diced tomatoes, chopped red onion, minced garlic, chopped cilantro, and the chopped jalapeño pepper.
  5. Season: Squeeze the juice of one lime over the mixture. Add the salt, black pepper, cumin, and sugar (if desired) to taste.
  6. Mix: Gently stir all the ingredients together until well combined.
  7. Chill: For the best flavor, cover the salsa and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and develop.
  8. Taste and Adjust: Before serving, taste your salsa and adjust the seasoning if needed. You can add more salt, lime juice, or other seasonings to suit your preferences.
  9. Serve: Serve your delicious homemade salsa with tortilla chips, tacos, grilled meats, or as a topping for various dishes.

Enjoy your homemade salsa! It's great for parties or as a flavorful condiment for your favorite tamales.
